Brazil nuts are a good source of selenium
Beneficial Effects of Selenium
Selenium is an antioxidant which assists vitamin E to protect cells from damage from free radicals. Selenium plays and important role in supporting the immune system and in a healthy cardiovascular system. Low levels of selenium have been linked to increased risks of cancer, inflammatory diseases and cataracts. It is also important as it is necessary in the production of thyroid hormone. Selenium also helps to protect against heavy metal damage.
Selenium is necessary to produce the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase. This enzyme plays a vital role in protecting against oxidative damage to cell membranes. Glutathione peroxidase levels are low in patients with arthritis, eczema, and psoriasis. Glutathione peroxidase is especially important in reducing the production of inflammatory prostaglandins and leukotrienes.
Less than optimal intake of selenium may have adverse effects on psychological function, even in the absence of signs of frank selenium deficiency. In a preliminary trial of healthy young men, consumption of a high-selenium diet (226.5 mcg selenium per day) was associated with improved mood (i.e., decreased confusion, depression, anxiety, and uncertainty), compared to consumption of a low-selenium diet (62.6 mcg selenium per day.) In a double-blind trial, people who had a low selenium intake experienced greater improvement in depression symptoms after selenium supplementation (100 mcg per day) than did people with adequate selenium intake, suggesting that low-level selenium deficiency may contribute to depression.
Selenium absorption is adversly affected by high doses of vitamin C.
