Basic- H

No toxic fumes, or corrosive chemicals. No phosphates or nitrates to harm the environment.

History

One of Shaklee's most famous products, Basic-H, was launched in 1960. It was the first environmentally safe cleaner on the market, later to become an official Earth Day product. But the birth of Basic-H was literally by accident. George Spunt, in the book, "When Nature Speaks: The Life of Forrest C. Shaklee Sr." explains:

"One night when Dr. Shaklee was engaged in processing a certain oil, the gears of the machine suddenly became cross meshed, breaking the gears, and spilling some of the oil. In examining them, Dr. Shaklee found his hands coated with an oily substance. He discovered upon wiping his hands with a paper towel, that he removed all the grime caused by touching the broken gear, leaving his hands perfectly clean. Without any specific purpose in mind at that point, he recorded the formula of the substance for future possible use.

Later tests showed the substance was biodegradable and in harmony with nature. When asked what to call it, Dr. Shaklee replied, well it's a good hand cleaner and it's made from basic oils, why not call it Basic-H?"

Since then Basic-H has been used to clean surfaces in spacecrafts and submarines and for 1,001 cleaning jobs by millions of people right here on Earth. Today, it's still an amazing and unbeatable cleaner, and the flagship of Shaklee's line of environmentally friendly household cleaning and laundry products.

NASA took Basic-H to the moon on one of the Apollo missions and washed down space capsule at Cape Canaveral and instrument panels. Named an official Earth Day product in 1990.

Key: Has patented organic cleaning agent.

Properties: Made from plant material, non-flammable, non-toxic, neutral pH (same as skin, about 6.5).

POLLUTION PROBLEM: 60% of water pollution comes from homes, not industry

How it works?

Basic-H makes water wetter by releasing the surface tension in water. It will therefore allow water to more easily get under dirt and grime and miraculously wash it away!

  • Basic-H is effective in hot, cold, hard or soft water.
  • It's biodegradable, and completely decomposes in the soil in seven days!
  • 100% Non-Irritating: even when used at full strength - Basic-H has same pH reading (6.5) as human skin!
  • Non-magnetic: cleaned surfaces have no residual magnetic field, thus will not attract dust or dirt. Perfect for computers, and other digital equipment.
  • Non-volatile: use Basic-H near heat or flame in complete safety, as it will NOT burn. (FYI Basic-H also good for burns, keep a 4-oz squeeze bottle of it handy in the kitchen for such purposes).

SOLUTION: Basic-H is fully biodegradable: Its primary ingredients will quickly convert within a few days to water and carbon dioxide when in contact with natural bacteria in water and soil. HAS 1001 uses!

Basic-H literally has 1,001 uses; here are a few others you may not be aware of

  • Houseplants flourish with just 2-3 drops of Basic-H in a gallon of water when watering.
  • Two drops of Basic-H in boiling water makes eggs peel so much easier!
  • Basic-H has been used as a wetting agent for fire department tankers.
  • Its detergent free and economical too, fire departments report using one pint to one quart of Basic-H per 500 gallons of water.
  • General Spot Remover: Apply Basic-H directly on spotted area. Use a toothbrush or finger to rub into area. Wipe off with a damp cloth or rinse in basin of water. (Removes coffee, ink, grass, etc)
  • Insect repellent: Apply Basic-H full strength on skin - mosquitoes, chiggers, flies, fleas etc. will not bite where Basic-H is applied! Also if your forgot to use Basic-H beforehand, use it afterwards if you get a bite to stop the itching.
  • Wigs (synthetic): Mix 1 teaspoon Basic-H to 1 cup of water. Wash wig and rinse. Comes out beautifully with original set. Will not tangle.
  • Boat Bottom Algae: 1 tablespoon Basic-H to one gallon of water.
  • Leather goods: Use two drops on a wet cloth. Will not remove wax. Shine with a dry cloth. Excellent for cleaning shoes before applying wax. Cleans and softens everything from shoes, purses and belts, to bridles and saddles.
  • Fruits & Vegetables: Use 1 tablespoon to gallon of water. Wash and rinse. Removes residuals or poisonous sprays and grime of handing in transport.
  • Septic tank: Pout one quart of Basic-H into septic tank drainage when it becomes sluggish to clean it out. Does not hinder bacterial action in septic tank or cesspools. In fact, it helps build bacteria in your septic tank.
  • Changing Tires: Spray diluted or full-strength Basic-H on rims. Tires go on easier.
  • Rust: Use Basic-H for rust inhibitor for rusty nuts and bolts. Also use one tablespoon to radiator full or water or anti-freeze to help prevent rust.

Additional information: View an informational pamphlet about Basic-H.

Other products:

Some of the dangers of non-biodegradable cleaners

Would you bring something into your home if you knew it could cause allergies, birth defects, or even cancer? Many are doing just that.

The culprits:

  • Window cleaners - Many familiar window cleaning sprays, like Windex and Glass Plus, contain buryl cellosolve, a neurotoxin that's easily absorbed through the skin.
  • Dishwashing detergents - Cascade and Sun Light, two of the best-selling brands of automatic dishwashing detergent, contain phosphates and chlorine-two extremely toxic chemicals. Phosphates released into the environment rob lakes and ponds of oxygen, leading to the suffocation of aquatic plants and animals. And chlorine fumes are highly irritating to the eye, throat, and respiratory tract. Inhaling them can cause headaches, burning eyes, and breathing difficulties.
  • Laundry soaps - Many well-known laundry powders, like Tide, All, Gain, and Dash, contain sodium silicate-a corrosive that can burn the eyes and skin. Other chemicals often found in laundry detergent are sodium sulfate (a corrosive that can cause severe eye, skin, and respiratory irritation), ethoxy-lated alcohols (which may contain I,4-dioxane, which is "reasonably anticipated" to be a human carcinogen). And the harshness of many soaps and detergents can cause mild to severe irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract
  • Scouring powders
  • All-Purpose Cleaners - Many popular household cleaning solutions, like Fantastik and Formula 409, contain a synthetic solvent and grease cutter called butyl cellosolve. This hazardous petroleum-based chemical can irritate your skin and eyes, and repeated exposure to it can cause permanent liver and kidney damage, and impair the body's ability to replenish its blood supply.
  • Bathroom - Dow Bathroom Cleaner contains dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, which can burn eyes and skin. Many traditional scouring cleansers, like AJAX powder, contain crystalline silica, an eye, skin, and lung irritant, classified as "reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen" by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

Why are the cleaning & laundry products you use every day harmful? Anything you get on your skin or inhale will be absorbed into your body, similar to the nicotine patch for those quitting smoking. When cleaning you do both! You get it on you, and you inhale the toxic fumes that are being emitted. Many of the chemicals found in household cleaners are responsible for:

  • many asthmatic, cold & flu symptoms
  • hyperactivity
  • headaches
  • fatigue
  • and even learning disabilities in children
  • Some are even cancer causing!

The large corporations make products to sell for profit. If they can find a less expensive way to manufacture those products, they get higher profits. Research takes money, and most companies will not spend profits. Why doesn't our Government do something? Because, as one federal official puts it: "It takes a team of scientists and 300 mice, 2 to 3 years, and about $300,000 to determine whether one single chemical causes cancer." Also, large corporations have ways of beating the system in order to make their profits higher. What make Shaklee so different? The Shaklee Corporation has spent 50 years and over $100 Million on research, testing and development to insure safe products to you and me! The entire philosophy of this company is based on the founder's (Dr. Shaklee's) commitment to humanity: "Products in Harmony with Nature & You!"

Not only are Shaklee cleaning products economical, but they are THE WISE CHOICE as well!

* Store brands like Tide now state on the front of the box that the box will do a certain number of loads. The mistake that most people make is to not look closely enough into what that manufacturer defines as a "load." As a result, they wrongly compare Fresh Laundry Liquid usage of 1/4 cup per large load to brand-X loads which are medium to small loads. The Tide box we used for comparison claims to do 80 loads. We called the phone number that was on their box to find out what they define as a "load." Their 80 loads claim is based on a "load" which they define as 5.5 pounds of laundry. Most all washing machines are made for at least a 15-20 pound capacity. So you can see that calling their 5.5 pound load a "medium load" is being very generous to them. 5.5 pounds would be equal to maybe 3 or 4 towels. So you cannot accurately compare their 80 medium to small 5.5 lb. loads to the 80 or more 1/4 cup large loads you get from a box of Fresh Laundry Liquid. Rather you must compare medium loads to medium loads. Our Fresh Laundry Liquid box says use 1/8 cup per medium load. By our actual measurement, we were able to measure 168 1/8-cup loads from a 9 lb. box of Fresh Laundry Liquid, which is what we used for the comparison.
