Fiber and Dieting

Apples provide soluble fiber.

Can Fiber Help Me Lose Weight?

Yes! Fiber provides many health benefits, but it is as a calorie-free weight loss tool that it really shines! When eat more fiber it can help you lose weight in four important ways:

  1. Fiber curbs your appetite.
Fiber keeps your brain full! Fiber stimulates cholecystokinin (CCK), a hormone that sends a message to your brain that you are full. Fiber promotes and prolongs the elevation of CCK in the blood, which makes you feel full for longer periods of time.
  2. Fiber will actually eliminate calories from the food you eat.
Research has shown that people who consume a high fiber diet tend to excrete more calories in their stool. This is because fiber helps to block the absorption of calories and lead calories out of the body. This can help you lose up to 2 additional pounds each month!
  3. Fiber foods tend to be low calory foods.
Because high-fiber foods contain fewer calories per volume of food, eating them allows you to eat a larger volume of food without consuming a lot of calories. This helps you feel satisfied longer.
  4. Fiber tends to stabilize blood sugar levels.
High-fiber foods help normalize blood glucose levels by slowing down the time it takes food to leave the stomach. This delays the absorption of glucose (blood sugar) from a meal. This is important for those who suffer with low blood sugar problems.

When starting a weight loss plan, consume mostly soluble fiber in supplement form. This will help to jumpstart your weight loss. Later consume a balance of insoluble and soluble fiber, receiving the majority of your fiber through your diet. If you choose the right foods, you will naturally get enough of each type of fiber.

If you aren't used to a high-fiber diet, begin slowly when boosting your fiber intake. Also, when you increase the fiber in your diet, drink plenty of water, as increasing fiber without more fluid can lead to constipation.
