Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) works to improve energy production at the cellular level. It is utilized in the cell by the mitochondria, the cellular structure responsible for producing energy for the cell. It is also recognized as a powerful antioxidant.

Coenzyme Q10 is needed for normal blood sugar metabolism. Animals with diabetes have been reported to be CoQ10 deficient. People with type 2 diabetes have been found to have significantly lower blood levels of CoQ10 compared with healthy people. In one trial, blood sugar levels fell substantially in 31% of people with diabetes after they supplemented with 120 mg per day of CoQ7, a substance similar to CoQ10. In people with type 1 diabetes, however, supplementation with 100 mg of CoQ10 per day for three months neither improved glucose control nor reduced the need for insulin. The importance of CoQ10 supplementation for people with diabetes remains an unresolved issue, though some doctors recommend approximately 50 mg per day as a way to protect against possible effects associated with diabetes-induced depletion.

CoQ10 May Slow Parkinson's Disease
Building on the discovery that patients with Parkinson's have reduced levels of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) in their mitochondria, researchers at the University of California, San Diego, have found that supplementation with CoQ10 can slow the deterioration of function experienced by Parkinson's sufferers.
Researchers led by Clifford Shults, MD, divided 80 patients with early-stage Parkinson's into four groups. All of the patients had the tremor, stiffness and slowed movements typical of early-stage Parkinson's. Three of the groups received CoQ10 in dosages of 300, 600, or 1200 mg/day, together with vitamin E. The fourth group received placebo. Patients were evaluated every four months for 16 months, unless their level of disability made it appropriate to intervene with drugs.
Progression of symptoms was slower in the three treatment groups than in those taking placebo, and benefits were strongest in the group receiving 1200 mg/day (44% less reduction in cognition, motor function, and daily activities). CoQ10 was safe and well-tolerated at all three dosage levels. As expected, those taking CoQ10 showed significant increases both in serum levels of CoQ10 and in mitochondrial energy production.

Sources of CoQ10
CoQ10 is in everything we eat. It is not possible, however, to consume enough CoQ10 through dietary intake to achieve blood levels capable of producing clinical effects.
Based on bioavailability studies, the best preparations are soft-gelatin capsules that contain CoQ10 in an oil base.
